The guide below covers the basics of insurance; be sure to ask about ways we can help you save money at your next appointment.

Understanding How Dental Insurance Works

A dental insurance plan provides a set level of coverage for a variety of dental services in exchange for monthly premiums. Unlike regular health insurance that’s focused on paying for treatment once you’re already experiencing sickness or an injury, dental insurance provides higher coverage for preventive services, meaning you save more money by being proactive about dental care and not waiting for something to go wrong. Note that dental insurance often only covers part of a given service; we’ll ask for payments not covered by your insurance at the end of your visit.

What Your Dental Insurance Plan Covers

Only your insurance company can give you a detailed explanation of what your insurance plan covers, but the basic structure tends to follow 100-80-50 guidelines. Preventive services like oral exams receive around 100% coverage, minor restorations like fillings get 80% coverage, and major restorations like dental crowns get 50% coverage. Dental insurance usually only kicks in for treatments that are necessary for good oral health; elective cosmetic procedures are typically not included.
